Banjul, 14 January 2025 - The Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Cuban Embassy in The Gambia, Laura Elízabeth Martínez Galindo, received today H.E. Mr. Bernard Mendy, Director of the Americas Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad.
During the meeting, the 46 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which began on May 19, 1979, were reviewed and the successful cooperation in the health sector, which dates back to 1996, was highlighted, with the current presence of more than 100 Cuban collaborators in The Gambia. Educational collaboration, among other aspects, was also highlighted.
For his part, Mr. Mendy reaffirmed Gambia's firm stance against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba, expressing his support for the island's struggle for its lifting. In this context, he underlined that Cuba, like any other country, has the full right to its sovereignty and has been an example of solidarity and humanism despite the difficulties it faces. He also stressed the firmness and courage of the Cuban people, assuring them that they will always have the support of the brotherly Gambian people in any circumstance.
