Garvey-Maceo High School celebrates 45th anniversary of founding

Clarendon, 19 May 2025. A representation of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica, headed by Ambassador Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, attended the ceremony marking the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Garvey-Maceo High School, one of the four educational centres donated by the Cuban people to the brotherly Jamaican people. The institution, located in May Pen, Clarendon, opened its doors on a date of special significance for Cuba in 1980, commemorating the fall in combat of our National Hero José Martí.

During the activity Erica Ewbanks, director of the centre, and Aujaé Dixon, chairman of the Board of Directors, thanked the people and government of Cuba for such a precious gift. They recalled the historic ties of brotherhood and cooperation that unite both peoples and especially Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley. They reaffirmed the commitment to be worthy heirs of the institution's motto: ‘Excellence in study, work and play’.

In his words to those present, the Cuban Ambassador reflected with the students on the relevance of deepening the study of the life and work of the two heroes who proudly bear the school's name: Marcus Garvey and Antonio Maceo. He reaffirmed the commitment of the largest of the Antilles to continue our vocation of solidarity, despite the obstacles imposed by the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US government against the island and its continued inclusion in the unilateral and spurious list of countries that supposedly sponsor terrorism.

As part of the event, ‘the Cubanz’, as they proudly call themselves, made an exhibition of the main results achieved by the different departments such as agriculture, science, computer science, sports, manual arts, among others.
