General comments on draft resolution L.30, “Prevention of Genocide.”

Mr. President,

We support the adoption of draft resolution L.30.

We positively welcome the inclusion of a call for the General Assembly to consider holding a high-level event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

This commemoration is highly relevant in an international context in which, unfortunately, genocide, crimes against humanity, and extermination continue to occur.

The genocide of the Palestinian people carried out by Israel with the support of the United States has subjected millions of people to starvation, forced displacement, and collective punishment.

In the past three years alone, this genocide has cost the lives of more than 72,000 Palestinians, including over 21,000 children.

Mr. President,

The economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba constitutes an act of genocide and collective punishment.

This policy has been brutally intensified with the imposition of an energy blockade on 30 January, which has prevented Cuba from receiving any fuel supplies for more than three months.

By preventing Cuba from receiving oil, the United States seeks to create a humanitarian crisis and to bring an entire population to its knees through hunger and disease.

Remaining silent in the face of such acts only encourages impunity for the perpetrators.

Thank you.
