General comments on draft resolution L.7, “Mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.”

Mr. President,

We thank the delegation of Kenya, on behalf of the African Group, for presenting draft resolution L.7, which contributes to reaffirming the commitment to the fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related forms of intolerance.

We positively note that the resolution renews the mandate of the Special Rapporteur and reaffirms the importance of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, as well as the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, which this year marks its twenty-fifth anniversary.

Despite progress achieved, greater political commitment and concrete action are still required to eradicate the abhorrent discriminatory and racist practices that continue to persist in the world.

This mandate of the Human Rights Council must continue to denounce systematic human rights violations committed against people of African descent.

In numerous developed countries, acts of police brutality, institutionalized racial discrimination, and other reprehensible practices remain frequent.

Mr. President,

For Cuba, the defence of the highest standards of social justice and the elimination of remaining vestiges of racism, discrimination, and racial prejudice are a priority.

In line with this commitment, Cuba supports draft resolution L.7 and reaffirms its willingness to continue actively and constructively supporting the mandate of the Special Rapporteur.

Thank you
