Accra, 7 November. – At a ceremony held today at Jubilee House, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Mr. John Dramani Mahama, handed over a donation to the people of the Republic of Cuba consisting of a shipment of rice, Ghanaian chocolate, sugar, protein-based foodstuffs, mattresses, pillows, water tanks, medicines, clothing and field sanitation facilities, among other essential items. The contribution was made as a gesture of solidarity and support to help redress the extensive material damage caused by Hurricane Melissa, which severely affected the eastern region of the country.
The Cuban Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Julio E. Pujol Torres, expressed, on behalf of Cuba, his sincere gratitude to the President and people of Ghana for this noble gesture, which reflects the close friendship and solidarity that have united both nations for more than 65 years.
Ghana was the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba, inspired by the shared ideals of the Father of Ghana’s Independence, Kwame Nkrumah, and the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
Donations were also presented during the ceremony to Jamaica and Sudan.
