Ghanaian Minister for Parliamentary Affairs ratifies historical ties with Cuba

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Leader of the Majority in the Parliament of Ghana, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, received the Ambassador of Cuba, Pedro Luis Despaigne González, at the Legislative Branch.

In the meeting, the Cuban diplomat highlighted the historical bonds between the two countries, informed to the Majority Leader about the current electoral process in Cuba, and addressed a group of aspects of the Cuban political system, highlighting: the advances in the composition by gender within the Cuban Parliament and the relationship between the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State. The Ambassador also referred to the attempts by the Trump´s administration to reverse the progress reached in US-Cuba diplomatic relations, and how the blockade still maintains its full force.

The Minister and parliamentary leader thanked the Cuban Ambassador for his visit and emphasized the historical friendship of Cuba with the African peoples and with his country in particular, highlighting how the Caribbean country has contributed in preparing Ghanaian doctors.

Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is member of the Parliament of Ghana uninterrupted since 1997, recalled his stay in Cuba in April 2012, when he joined a delegation of seven parliamentarians, received by the then Vice President of the Council of State, Esteban Lazo Hernández, today President of the National Assembly of People's Power. He also recognized the work carried out in his country by the parliamentary group of friendship to Cuba, and expressed his support for its reactivation. The Ambassador of Cuba was accompanied by the First Secretary of the Embassy, Julio César Sánchez Martínez.
