Goodbye to Terje Enger, great friend of Cuba

Oslo, October 15, 2022.  October 8th,  was a sad day: at the age of 84, Terje Enger passed away. His feelings of solidarity and appreciation towards Fidel, the Revolution and the Cuban people, led him to become one of the founders of the Norway-Cuba Friendship Association in 1964 and its President for many years with an outstanding performance. Likewise, he was editor-in-chief of "Cuba Nytt", the Organization's magazine, until his retirement in 2021.

As a sailor, in his youth, he had the opportunity to visit Cuba and was captivated. In fact, at some point he thought of staying to join the liberation struggle that was being waged on the Island and, being only 21 years-old and on board of a Norwegian ship anchored in the Port of Havana where he was enrolled as a machinist, he lived with emotion the triumph of the Revolution on January 1st., 1959, and Fidel's victorious entry into that city seven days later.

Those passages of his life are collected in the book “Norwegian Sailors in Cuba. Stories about Norwegian shipping in Latin America over 150 years”, which he wrote for posterity. In them is the genesis of his commitment to Cuba, which over the years became imperishable.

The Ambassador of Cuba to Norway, Maité Rivero Torres, attended the funeral services at the Enger Church, in Søndre Land. There she conveyed to family and friends, the deepest condolences on behalf of the Cuban people. Likewise, she read a letter sent by the president of the Cuba Institute of Friendship with the People (ICAP), Fernando González Llort, on the occasion of such a sad event.

As José Martí said, "death is not true when the work of life has been well accomplished."

Goodbye, dear friend! You will live forever in the hearts of all Cubans. Thanks for everything.
