changes in US immigration policy towards Cuba

THE BAHAMAS, 13 January 2017. –Last night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of The Bahamas issued a press statement welcoming the announcement on the elimination of the United States policy towards Cuba known as "wet foot, dry foot”.

The statement highlights that with the elimination of the aforesaid policy the Cuban nationals will be treated like any other foreign nationals landing in the United States illegally. Besides, the Bahamian government expressed that they will wait to see whether the policy will continue beyond the current United States administration, which is about to change.

The Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration pointed out that the "wet foot, dry foot” policy was believed to be driving the rise in Cuban landings in The Bahamas.

In 1996 Cuba and The Bahamas signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration, which is still in place. On 8 and 9 December 2016, the Fourth Round of Technical Talks on Migration between both countries took place in Nassau.
