Graduates from the Community Based Medical Program visit the Cuban Embassy

Young Gambian doctors visit the Embassy of Cuba

Banjul, April 28, 2017.- A group of young Gambians who recently finished their studies under the New Community Based Medical Program, visited the Embassy of Cuba where they held a meeting with the Cuban ambassador, Lázaro Herrera. During the meeting, the junior doctors expressed their highest appreciation for the valuable assistance provided by Cuba and reaffirmed their commitment to dedicate all their efforts to providing services to their fellow citizens in the most remote corners of the country. The Cuban ambassador congratulated the young graduating doctors for successfully completing their studies after many years of efforts and emphasized the importance of their future work as health watchers and fighters for the welfare of their people. He urged them to be faithful to the commitment made and to privilege human values in the face of the commercialization of medical care. The new Community Based Medical Program, developed and directed by the ELAM (Latin American University of Medicine), was initiated in 2008 on the initiative of the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, with the objective of guaranteeing medical attention to the Gambian population in the remote communities of the country, based on the training of their own health professionals. The Program constitutes an important complement to the decisive contribution that Cuba has provided for more than two decades to this African country.
