Graduation Ceremony in Guyana of 19 doctors trained in Cuba

Georgetown, 26-09-2018. On Saturday, August 25th, 2018 took place at the Convention Centre, Arthur Chung, the graduation of 19 doctors trained in Cuba, of them 11 Guyanese, 4 of St Kitts and Nevis, 3 of Saint Lucia and 1 from Malaysia.

The graduation ceremony was presided by the representative of the Department of Public Services of Guyana, Vincent Alexander, who encouraged the graduates to cultivate the spirit of service, avoid individualism and provide health service of excellence to the most needed communities.

The Ambassador of Guyana to Cuba, Halim Majeed,in his speech urged the graduates to provide an optimum service, foster passion for the excellence, and reject mediocrity. He also expressed his gratitude to the Government of Cuba for continuing with this scholarship program.

The doctor, Valedictorian SodavieNaraine, defined these 7 years studying in Cuba as intense and expressed her appreciation to her parents and grandparents who played a very supportive role in her career, to her colleagues who remained united all the time, and to their Cuban professors. In turn, she expressed on their behalf their gratitude to the government of Guyana and the government of Cuba for choosing them among hundreds of applicants giving them the possibility to be graduated as doctors.  Naraine along with her 18 colleagues swore in, the beginning of their medical career.

Today, there are 62 students of medicine being trained in Cuba, 22 of them are doing their specialties and soon in 2018-2019 academic course, 13 more students will start their medical studies.

The graduation ceremony was also represented by the permanent secretary of the Public Service Department, Mr. Reginald Brotherson, Dr. Tatiana Garcia, chief of the Cuban Medical Brigade who congratulated all the graduates and conveyed their willingness to continue strengthening the cooperation in the region.

On the other hand, LLanio González , Charge d’ Affaires of the Embassy of Cuba,  highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of our eternal Commander-in-Chief , Fidel Castro Ruz,who masterminded this humanitarian achievement. The Charge d’ Affaires also encouraged the graduates to support their countries in this sector highly important for the well-being of their people.
