Georgetown, 26-08-2018. On Saturday, August 25, 2018, the graduation of 19 doctors trained in Cuba took place at the Convention Center, Arthur Chung, of them 11 Guyanese, 4 from St. Kitts and Nevis, 3 from Saint Lucia and 1 from Malaysia.
The graduation was presided by the Guyanese representative of the Department of Public Services, Vincent Alexander, who urged the graduates to cultivate the spirit of service, avoid individualism and provide excellent health services to communities in need.
The Ambassador of Guyana in Cuba, Halim Majeed, in a brief address urged the graduates to provide an optimal service, cultivate passion for excellence and reject mediocrity. Majeed expressed his gratitude to the Government of Cuba for continuing providing this program.
The doctor, Valedictorian Sodavie Naraine, described the seven years of studies in Cuba as intense and thanked her parents and grandparents who were her main support, her colleagues who remained united and their Cuban professors. She also expressed her gratitude to the Government of Guyana and the Government of Cuba on behalf of his colleagues for choosing them among hundreds of applicants and making it possible to graduate as doctors. Naraine, along with her other 18 colleagues, swore in, the beginning of their careers.
There are currently 62 medical students trained in Cuba, 22 of them doing specialties and soon in the 2018-2019 academic year, 13 more students will begin their medical studies.
Also present at the graduation ceremony were the permanent secretary of the Public Service Department, Reginald Brotherson, and Dr. Tatiana Garcia, Chief of the Cuban Medical Brigade, who congratulated all the graduates and expressed their willingness to continue strengthening cooperation in the region.
On the other hand, Llanio González, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Cuba, expressed the importance of maintaining the legacy of our eternal Commander, Fidel Castro Ruz, who masterminded this humanitarian achievement and encouraged the graduates to support their country in this sector highly important for the well-being of its citizens.
