Helsinki.- April 12, 2024.- During a very special meeting, the Ambassador of Cuba, Beatriz Parra González, received Mr. Peter Fagerman, grandnephew of Fabian Fagerman, a Finnish citizen who joined the Liberation Army of Cuba between 1995 and 1998, under the command of Brigadier General Enrique Loynaz del Castillo.
In the exchange, the original and perfectly preserved document was shown that reflects the granting of the "Independence Medal" delivered by the then President of the Republic of Cuba, Mario García Menocal, with which Lieutenant Fabian Fagerman is recognized for providing his services in the Cuban War of Independence, on February 24, 1919.
Mr. Peter shared photos of his great-uncle, original documents and stories of his stay in Cuba, as well as the details of how his return to Finland occurred, where he found final rest with his family of origin. Likewise, he narrated how, in search of more details about this story, he had an electronic exchange with the city's historian, Eusebio Leal Spengler, who pointed out to him that the Finnish flag found in the City Museum was placed there in honor of the city. of his great-uncle and his contribution to the Cuban independence efforts.
The Ambassador thanked Mr. Fagerman for coming to the Embassy, and commented on her knowledge of this issue through one of Cuba's friends, Esa Tulkki, also present at this meeting. Likewise, he invited him to share the story of his great-uncle at the upcoming celebration of the 95th Anniversary of the Establishment of Relations between Cuba and Finland, due to its extraordinary relevance for the ties between both nations and their peoples.
