Grenadian Foreign Minister and Cuban Ambassador lead July 26 commemoration

Canciller granadino y embajadora cubana encabezan conmemoración por el 26 de julio

With the presence of Grenada’s Foreign Minister, Honorable Joseph Andall, and Cuba’s Ambassador to that country, Yadirys Echenique Paz, the commemoration of July 26, Day of National Rebellion, was held in Saint George.

During the ceremony, Minister Andall recalled the historical significance of the date and emphasized that threats to peace in the region require unity and cooperation. He also reiterated Grenada’s support for the Cuban people in their struggle against the economic blockade imposed by the United States.

For her part, Ambassador Yadirys Echenique Paz stated: “July 26 is not only a memory of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks; it is also the affirmation that peoples have the right to fight for their freedom and to defend their dreams.” In her remarks, the diplomat highlighted the friendship between Cuba and Grenada and the cooperation in sectors such as health, education, and technical training.

Dozens of guests attended the event, which became a space to honor Cuba’s history and the enduring ideals of July 26. The commemoration reaffirmed the value of that struggle as a symbol of dignity and resistance, and recalled that the legacy of the Revolution continues to inspire the defense of sovereignty and social justice.

Among the participants were Denis Cornwall, Minister of Finance; parliamentarian Peter David, leader of the Democratic People’s Movement (DPM); parliamentarian Clarice Modeste-Curwen; Dr. Terrance Marryshow, president of the Cuba–Grenada Friendship Association; former Senate President Chester Humphrey; as well as former Grenadian ambassadors to Cuba, Claris Charles and Vyra McQueen. Also present were Jorge Guerrero Veloz, Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Grenada; members of the Committee of Cuban Graduates; representatives of Cuban cooperation; and members of the Cuban community in Grenada.

On July 26, 1953, young revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, an action that marked the beginning of the final stage of Cuba’s struggle for independence. Seventy-three years later, at the Cuban Embassy in Grenada, the date was remembered as a symbol of rebellion, dignity, and resistance.
