New York, April 25th, 2023.- The Group of 77 plus China asserted before the United Nations Information Committee that the international community must take the necessary measures to rectify the imbalances in the current development of information and communications technologies, with the aim of making the world of the media is more fair, equitable and impartial.
During his intervention on behalf of the Group of 77 plus China, Gerardo Peñalver Portal, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, also warned about the growing tendency to spread “fake news” and disinformation on online platforms, including Social media, which exacerbates social discord, rival nationalisms, discrimination and hate speech, contributes to the rise of racism, xenophobia, negative stereotypes and related forms of intolerance.
He also highlighted the importance that the G77 attaches to harnessing digital technologies to enable socio-economic development and facilitate more effective and efficient governance and delivery of public services. In this area, he underlined the relevant role of the Department of Global Communication in bridging the existing differences between developed and developing countries in the fundamental sphere of public information and communications.
The G77 Group plus China also reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and human rights, including freedom of expression and access to information, as well as the principles of independence, pluralism and diversity of the media.
