Dubai, 28 de noviembre de 2023. As part of the preparation for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change, which begins on November 30 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Group of 77 and China, under the leadership of the Cuban presidency, began the coordination meetings prior to COP 28, which will last for two days of work.
After welcoming the representatives of the different member countries of the Group, the Special Representative for the Cuban Presidency of the Group of 77, Ambassador Pedro L. Pedroso Cuesta, gave way to exchanges on the different issues on the COP28 agenda. He emphasized the balanced and coherent nature of the bill, and that its approval would not delay the beginning of the complex negotiations ahead. He also gave an update on the status of the different processes being negotiated.
The Cuban presidency reiterated the importance of maintaining the unity of the Group, beyond its heterogeneity, an objective that will be reinforced during the Summit of Leaders of the Group, convened by Cuba for December 2 on the margins of the COP.
At COP 28, significant results should be delivered on the First Global Stocktake on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the Global Goal on Adaptation, the operationalization of new financial arrangements, and a Fund for Loss and Damage Arising from the Adverse Effects of Climate Change, Mitigation, a Just Transition, and Climate Finance.
The G77 and China are key players in intergovernmental negotiations on climate change. It brings together developing countries, so that it represents the fundamental mechanism through which the interests and needs of the South are positioned and defended in this area. These nations bear the least historical responsibility for the current climate crisis, but they suffer disproportionately from its effects.
