New York, February 8th, 2023.- Cuba presented today a draft project of declaration on behalf of the Group 77 and China at the Special High Level Meeting on the issue: “Doha Programme of Action as accelerator of the implementation of Agenda 2030”.
Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso, permanent representative of Cuba to United Nations, stated that it’s unacceptable that the Least Developed Countries, LDC, still have the most limited productive capacity, insufficient fiscal space, large macroeconomic imbalances, the risk of collapsing due to debts and limited access to the technologies which also hinder their development in all spheres.
The Cuba diplomat also stressed that the world faces a crisis of inequality where 46 nations, representing the 14% of the world population, are at risk of being left behind while, in the last ten years, the richest 1% of humanity has gained half the new global wealth
He assured that, while the implementation of the Doha Progamme of Action is an important step in the right direction, it will be required a renewed global Alliance, solidarity and proper means of implementation.
Before this situation, it’s necessary to grant adequate and timely access to safe vaccines, of quality, efficient and affordable to the LDC; immediate actions like debt relief, it’s necessary to increase the transfer of technology and the creation of capacities, as well as the scientific and technical cooperation from developed countries to the LDC, aiming at fostering the sustainable development in the three dimensions and the full implementation of Agenda 2030, added the Cuban representative.
With this vision, the Group 77 and China reiterated its solidarity with the Least Developed Countries and the support to the implementation of Doha Programme of Action within the framework of the South-South Cooperation which does not substitutes Cooperation North-South, but complements it, he concluded.
