Group of Maori and Pacific doctors plan to visit Cuba

Wellington, August 30th , 2019. During a visit to the Cuban Embassy, ​​Dr. Rawiri Mckree Jansen, clinical director of the National Hauora Coalition, an organization focused on the health and well-being of Maori communities in New Zealand, expressed the interest of making a visit to Cuba, which allows health specialists in the Maori and Pacific communities to learn about the successes of the Cuban system.

Dr. Jansen explained that New Zealand doctors will be participating in the Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress (PRIDoC) to be held in September 2020 in Vancouver, Canada. It is an event for indigenous doctors and medical students from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America, Hawaii and the Pacific, which allows them to establish contacts, discuss issues of mutual interest and share advances and scientific knowledge to promote Health and well-being of indigenous communities.

Dr. Jansen conveyed his interest in making a visit to the Island and completing a program that allows him to know first-hand how the Cuban health system works, the advances and challenges of primary care, as well as the achievements made by the country in areas such as the fight against cancer and diabetes.

During the meeting, the Cuban Ambassador, Mario Alzugaray, highlighted the importance that Cuba attaches to medical cooperation with the Pacific islands, emphasizing the presence of collaborators in Kiribati, Nauru and Vanuatu. (Embacuba NZ).
