The Herald and Chronicle highlight Cuba's gratitude to Zimbabwe

Harare, January 17, 2025 - The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, praised Zimbabwe and President Emmerson Mnangagwa for their support for the Caribbean nation to be removed from the United States list of countries sponsoring terrorism, highlighted today The Herald and Chronicle.

In extensive articles, the newspapers reflected as a crucial step in the battle against the blockade the decision of the outgoing head of the White House on recent Tuesday to remove Cuba from the list, in conjunction with other measures, despite its limited scope.

According to both media, the president of the Antillean country considered the step of the United States a victory for the Cuban people, but we also shared it with friends who have supported us internationally.

Likewise, they highlighted the reception at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana of the Cuban leader to Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Special Envoy of the President of Zimbabwe and the delivery of a message from the head of state.

Díaz-Canel spoke about both countries' shared struggles against unjust US sanctions, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and praised Harare's solidarity on the world stage.

The newspapers added the gratitude expressed by Mumbengegwi to Cuba's unwavering support during the African nation's struggle for independence by considering how  “Cuba was the smallest country from a geographical perspective, but it was the one that contributed the most to our struggle for liberation.”

Both media highlighted, at the same time, the importance of the extensive donation of equipment and historical documents from Havana to the African Liberation Museum in Harare, a project led by the African Knowledge Institute with full support from the Government.

This invaluable donation will receive a dignified ceremony once it arrives in Zimbabwe, Mumbengegwi said, referring to the Museum as a tribute to the continent's battle against colonialism and apartheid.

The Herald and Chronicle assured that Cuba's support for Zimbabwe extends beyond historical struggles and encompasses significant contributions to the development of human capital and the health sector in the post-independence era.
