Historical tourism and local development project launched in the UK: "La Cuba Profunda".

A tourism initiative called "La Cuba Profunda", driven by local development, is being launched in the UK

London, 2 April – The Cuban Embassy in the United Kingdom hosted the launch of ‘La Cuba Profunda’, a proposed tourist itinerary designed for eastern Cuba. The presentation of the product was led by academic Par Kumaraswami, Director of the Centre for Research on Cuba at the University of Nottingham, and Dr Ibrahin Amhed León Tellez, professor at the Centre for Local Development at the University of Granma and member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

This visit, coordinated by the Centre for Research on Cuba, provided an opportunity to showcase an initiative grounded in rigorous research into the historical events of the country’s eastern region. This academic foundation has been sustained over more than 20 years of collaboration between researcher Tony Kapcia and Professor Kumaraswami herself.

The “La Cuba Profunda” project focuses primarily on the province of Granma and the wider eastern region, positioning itself as an alternative to generic sun-and-beach tourism. It offers a comprehensive option for travellers interested in learning about the culture, as well as in the care and preservation of the natural and historical environment that formed the foundation of the Cuban Revolution.

During the meeting, Dr Ibrahin León, a professor with extensive experience in local development work in the province, discussed with the tour operators and specialist press present the viability of the project, which has been proven by previous experiences of this type of tour. Following this dialogue, several British tour operators confirmed that this model is of great interest to the UK public seeking new experiences in Cuba.

This initiative represents a success story in local development, bringing together the efforts of academics and researchers with local authorities, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism. The result is an offering that allows visitors to enjoy a unique immersive experience, actively contributing to community development and the preservation of national heritage.
