Homage to the loyalty of heroes

Homage to the loyalty of heroes
Silence, homage, certainties, hope. It dawns at the foot of the mountain of Mícara. Along the path that leads to the imposing Mausoleum of the Second Frank País Eastern Front, the wagons advance with the mortal remains of 40 combatants who are going to join hundreds of others who are already resting here.

Attentive to every movement, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, founding chief of this guerrilla Front, friend and brother in the struggles of such courageous revolutionaries. At his side, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

The melody Hasta pronto, by Commander of the Revolution Juan Almeida Bosque, accompanies the ceremony of transfer and burial of the remains of the combatants of the Second Eastern Front, fallen during the liberation war or who died after the triumph of the Revolution.

The voices of command tear the silence, everyone stops in unison. Solemnity takes over every space, and the notes of our National Anthem burst into the mountains.

For our glorious dead is the first remembrance, said the Commander of the Rebel Army José Ramón Machado Ventura, also a combatant of this Front. In his words, the evocation of the life and work of all of them, who continue "accompanying our people with the strength that emanates from their example, in the unwavering commitment to carry forward the Revolution".

He said that this site, like many others in the homeland, "is not a stage for formal commemorations, but a treasure chest that treasures the paradigm of resistance and victory that our dead have bequeathed to us". Their valuable inheritance, he stressed, is "a shield against which the lies and siren songs of our enemies crash, and at the same time a weapon that makes us stronger in each new combat".

The relatives of the combatants accompanied the ossuaries to the burial mounds, while the names of the 40 guerrillas were heard.

With the example of one who has not rested for a moment in that imperishable struggle to build and defend the work of the Cuban Revolution, the Army General advanced towards the Eternal Flame, which burns, as he once said, for "all the freedom fighters, immolated or heroically fallen in this territory throughout the historical process from Hatuey to Fidel"; for "all the graves scattered in the mountains and valleys of the Second Front", and for "all those who, knowing it or not, cemented with their blood our present and teach us to be able to follow their example for generations to come". There he left a white rose.

Then he went to meet his beloved Vilma. In front of the monolith that guards her ashes, he stops, deposits a flower and gives a military salute. He does it with the firmness that deserves such an incomparable companion of struggle, and with the tenderness of one who, together with her, shared so many years of life and dreams.
