The approval of the National Program for the Advancement of Women constitutes a demonstration of trust, respect and commitment of our country with gender equality, highlighted Teresa Amarelle Boué, member of the Political Bureau of the Party and general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC).
During the presentation of the Program's guidelines, the member of the Council of State stressed that, although novel, it is the continuity of an inclusive policy in favor of women, which the Revolution promoted since 1959, and which today shows its results, with the female protagonism in the development tasks of the country.
"For Cuban women, the Revolution, in itself, is our main equality program, because it created policies aimed at achieving empowerment throughout society and equal conditions for women and men," she said.
The National Program for the Advancement of Women - she explained - arises from the need to integrate in a single document actions that correspond to the principles and postulates recognized in the Magna Carta and the new scenario for updating the economic and social model, as well as the international commitments contracted by Cuba in this matter.
As a general principle, it is proposed to promote the advancement of women and equal rights, opportunities and possibilities, endorsed in our Constitution, as well as to deepen the objective and subjective factors of expressions of discrimination that still persist in society, and hinder a greater economic, political, social and family results, in order to eliminate them.
The specific objectives of the plan are to achieve greater consistency in the fulfillment of joint actions that promote the advancement of women; face obstacles related to gender equality; promote educational, training and informative actions from childhood, through the insertion of gender issues in study plans and programs of all forms and levels of education, and encourage families, communities, the media, mass organizations , policies and students, labor centers, the debate about the treatment of the role of women at the public and domestic level.
The General Secretary of the FMC emphasized that the conformation of the plan, which already has an elaborated legal norm, is the result of the work carried out by the organization in its relationship and permanent dialogue with women in the community.
