Indonesia press highlights the brave support offered to Cuba against the US blockade

Jakarta, June 28.- Under the title: “Indonesia firmly supports the UN Resolution to lift the blockade on Cuba”, the digital newspaper Republik Merdeka published an article stating Indonesia has joined the 183 countries that voted in favor of the UN General Assembly Draft Resolution that demands the lifting of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.

Referring to the statement shared on the official Twitter account of the Indonesian Mission to the United Nations, the text refers to the intervention of the representative of that country at the UN, evidencing that the blockade violates the norms and principles of international law, the sovereignty of the states , while hindering the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda goals and Cuba's recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The article also refers to the cost that the United States blockade has represented for the Caribbean island, prolonged for decades, with losses equivalent to more than 9,000 million USD and in serious restrictions on access to medical supplies and equipment for the production of food, even in times of Pandemic.

Citing the statement delivered at the recently held session of the UN General Assembly by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, "Like a virus, the blockade is suffocating and kills, it has to stop," the text states that sanctions have made it difficult for Cuba obtain supplies and medical equipment for the development of its own vaccines against Covid-19.

The article also highlights that unfortunately, the United States under the command of President Joe Biden opposed the UN Resolution against the blockade of Cuba, a position adopted for the last 24 years, except in 2016 during the Barack Obama administration, which opted for abstain given the reopening of diplomatic relations.

The article expands on the statement that under the Trump administration, the US once again opposed the resolution, and even canceled all Obama's opening measures to ease the blockade, a position that the current administration of Joe Biden has maintained, despite the fact that During his campaign, he promised to review Trump's policies regarding Cuba, considering them harmful to the people and with a negative impact on the progress of democracy and human rights, but unfortunately, until now, Biden's promise has not yet been seen in steps. or specific policies.

The text also refers to the statements of the prominent Indonesian journalist, Mr. Teguh Santosa, President General of the Indonesian Cyber Media Network and former head of International Relations of the Indonesian Journalists Association, who last May during the International Forum Solidarity with Cuba reiterated its rejection of the US blockade of Cuba, while urging the United States Government, under the Biden Administration, to change its mentality and perspective when dealing with other countries in the world, including Cuba.

In his message to the Cuban people, Teguh also stated that in this era of Pandemic, the Cuban Government and people, despite the blockade, are working hard to face the effects of Covid-19 and strengthen the political foundations, with hard work and successes.
