Indonesia rejects the US blockade against Cuba at the UN.

Jakarta, June 24.- At the headquarters of the United Nations General Assembly, the Indonesian delegation once again expressed its support to the Resolution “Need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba ”.

The Permanent Representative of the Indonesian Mission to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Mohammad Koba, reiterated his country's position of principles against the blockade, calling for an immediate end, while stating that behind his position, take into account the following 3 elements:

We reaffirm our principled position to support and take action on the draft resolution of the General Assembly for the immediate ending of the embargo by the United States against Cuba.

There are three reasons behind our support for the adoption of the resolution:

FIRST, Indonesia continues to strongly oppose unilateral embargoes and extraterritorial coercive measures against the sovereignty of other States, the legitimate interests of entities or persons under their jurisdiction, and the freedom of international trade and navigation as governed by international law including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

SECOND, Indonesia also believes such actions violate the principles of the sovereign equality of States, non-intervention, and non-interference in their internal affairs, which are enshrined in many international legal instruments, including the Charter of the United Nations, as well as the norms and principles governing peaceful relations among States

THIRD, Indonesia considers that such an embargo undermines the spirit of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, including the pandemic recovery effort.

It is also concerning to learn that the embargo has prevented the timely arrival of humanitarian aid, access to necessary medical supplies and essentials goods, detrimental to the overall response of Cuba to save lives and weather the health crisis brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Such embargo multiplies the pressure faced by the people, dimming their hope of achieving sustainable and resilient recovery from the pandemic, leaving them further behind, in this Decade of Action.

Indonesia underlines the importance for enhanced and constructive dialogue with a view to ending the embargo imposed against Cuba, and towards normalization of relations.

We encourage continued efforts toward normalization of relations through open and constructive dialogue.

For more than 25 years, countries have described the blockade as a flagrant violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and consider it the main obstacle to the development of the Caribbean nation.

The genocidal policy promoted by the United States government has caused, between April 2019 and December 2020 alone, losses in the order of 9,157 million dollars. Over six decades, the damages amount to 147,853 million dollars at current prices.
