Indonesian press highlights Cuban President's speech at the NAM Summit on COVID-19

Jakarta, May 5th- The Indonesian digital press has reflected various aspects of the speech of the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez, during the Virtual Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement "United against COVID-19".

RMOL published an article highlighting the strong condemnation of the Cuban president to the attack perpetrated against the Caribbean nation's embassy in Washington on May 1 and his demand for a thorough and rapid investigation, as well as severe sanctions and security guarantees for the diplomat missions  of Cuba in the territory of the United States. "The Cuban president reminded the United States of its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention" - the newspaper stated.

In a second article from the same media , other aspects of the intervention of the Cuban Head of State are highlighted, in which he rejected the high global military spending, specifying that more than 38% is assigned by the US and that according to his consideration: "... it would be more beneficial if assigned to research and science." The text also quotes, in Indonesian language, some fragments of President Díaz-Canel's speech, while reproducing the quote from the Historic Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, related to the development of increasingly sophisticated weapons in instead of promoting medical research at the service of humanity, that was mentioned by the Cuban president during his intervention, due to its validity in these moments of pandemic.

The Virtual Summit of the NAM, in which the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, also participated, had a space to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the adoption of the "Bandung Principles", considered the basis of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries.

The meeting convened by Azerbaijan sent a strong message of support for the work of the World Health Organization (WHO), and in it´s final declaration, the participating countries also condemned the enactment and application of unilateral coercive measures against the member states of the Movement and urged the international community to take urgent and effective measures to eliminate the use of such measures, inconsistent with the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
