Indonesian press highlights Cuba's presidency of the G77+China

Jakarta, January 14- The Indonesian newspaper Republik Merdeka highlighted the assumption by the Greater Antilles of the Group of 77 plus China.

The article includes the words of the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, underlining the honor that represents to accept the succession as President of the G77+China , after having been in the hands of Pakistan, as well as the trust placed in Cuba to lead, this year, this diverse and growing group at a time of great challenge for developing countries. Likewise, the Cuban President praised the commendable work carried out by Pakistan, as leader of the Group during the past year.

The President and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba also called for the unity of the Group,  to overcome the obstacles that currently prevent the progress of the people. He referred: "Our nations continue to be at the back of global development, while bearing the consequences of the crises and inequalities derived from the current unjust international order."

Faced with this world scenario, Díaz-Canel praised the role of the G77+China as an economic conscience of underdeveloped countries, which promotes unity between different peoples, regions, identities, cultures and levels of development. He stressed that the power of two thirds of the world has made it possible to achieve significant progress in certain goals and ideals, but there are still many substantial problems pending.

The Cuban president asserted that given the setback that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused in various countries, it is very important to reach a consensus on the issues that affect the bloc and its member states. In his message, Díaz-Canel reiterated his commitment to continue working tirelessly to defend the highest interests of the member countries of the G77+China.

The G-77 group was founded on June 15, 1964 as the United Nations' largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries. The group has 77 founding members and in November 2013, the organization grew to 134 member countries, including China.
