Interactive Dialogue on adequate housing and the consequences of the external debt for the full enjoyment of all human rights.

PRESS RELEASE

Geneva, March 1, 2018. In his statement in the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing and the Independent Expert on the consequences of the external debt for the full enjoyment of all human rights, in the 37th regular session of the Human Rights Council being held in Geneva, the Permanent Representative of Cuba, Ambassador Pedro L. Pedroso Cuesta, thanked both Rapporteurs for the presentation of their reports.

The Cuban representative also said that his country took note of the proposal of the ten fundamental principles of a rights-based housing strategy and of the checklist that is recommended to be used for the revision or elaboration of housing strategies, in order to comply with the commitments included in the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda.

Likewise, Pedroso Cuesta recognized the work carried out so far by the Independent Expert on external debt in the elaboration of guiding principles to evaluate the impact of economic reform policies on human rights.

He said his country is confident that, once concluded, these principles will help States and international financial institutions to comply with their human rights obligations during periods of financial difficulty, when considering the adoption of fiscal consolidation measures, counter-cyclical initiatives or other economic measures of a restrictive nature.

The Cuban Ambassador in Geneva concluded his remarks by informing that in this regular session Cuba will present a resolution on this important topic.
