International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, 26 September

Día Internacional para la Eliminación Total de las Armas Nucleares, 26 de septiembre.

On the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of All Nuclear Weapons on 26 September, we wish to recall the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, adopted at the CELAC Summit held on 28 and 29 January of 2014 in Havana, which is an important contribution of our region to achieve the elimination of nuclear weapons and the use of force.

Cuba, in accordance with its firm stance against nuclear weapons, signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on this past 20th of September during the opening ceremony of incorporation into the multilateral instrument. The initiative adopted prohibits the development, testing, production, acquisition, possession, storage and transfer, as well as the threat of use of the lethal devices. Cuba expressed that the signing of the instrument constitutes a fundamental step towards nuclear disarmament, which will significantly contribute to a world free of nuclear weapons as it has the merit of being the first multilateral instrument of disarmament achieved in the last two decades.

The Committee on International Relations of the National Assembly of Cuban People's Power, in the interest of reaffirming the Cuban commitment to this scourge, has issued a statement expressing its rejection of the possession of nuclear weapons, as well as the doctrines that seek to justify its use or threat of use of such weapons.
