With President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez on hand, the 12th edition of the Cuba’s international higher education conference “Universidad 2020” was inaugurated yesterday in Havana’s Karl Marx Theater. The event has been held biennially since 1998, and over the years has attracted more than 17,200 delegates from around the world.
This year, delegates from more than 45 nations are participating, including ministers of Higher Education from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe, as well as presidents of national associations of rectors, and prominent figures. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Cuban Party and government leaders, and representatives of several professional organizations.
To open the event, a lecture entitled "Universities and sustainable development: Cuba’s vision," was presented by Dr. José Ramón Saborido Loidi, minister of Higher Education, who recalled that, despite growing hostility from the United States government toward Cuba, "The Revolution substantially increased salaries for all teachers, professors and other workers in the educational system, new university campuses were built and progress continues to be made in improving the infrastructure of most universities."
The conference will continue through the week, with delegates participating in forums, workshops, symposiums, panels and round tables, in which the role of the University and the UN’s 2030 Agenda 2030 for sustainable development will be addressed, as the central topic. FUENTE: Granma
