International Women's Day was commemorated with a discussion convened by the Diethnis Vima Publishing House.
This first of several events designed to debate important issues in revolutionary Cuba focused on the participation and development of Cuban women in the Revolution. Following the presentation by Isabel Hernández, an Embassy official, pediatrician María Tamiolaki and Natasha Terlexi of the Diethnis Vima Publishing House spoke on the topic.
The speakers offered extensive information about the presence of Cuban women in revolutionary life and work, their active role in transcendental tasks of the revolutionary process, their empowerment in all spheres of society and in important roles in political and social leadership, the State and government, the economy, health, science and technology, diplomacy, and other important sectors.
They also referred to the mechanisms created to protect women, such as the Family Code, which specifies: "Full equality between women and men, equitable distribution of time spent on domestic work and caregiving among all family members," and the Penal Code, which establishes penalties for acts of violence against women. They also recognized that organizations and institutional channels to assist women have been established and that the conditions exist for their full integration into society.
After the initial interventions, some participants were interested in delving deeper into the topics discussed, recognizing the value and significance of the work the Revolution has done to guarantee full equality for women and the defense of their rights.
