Kingston, Jamaica, 7 March 2019. As part of the celebration of International Women's Day, a large representation of Jamaican community leaders held a fruitful exchange with the Ambassador of Cuba in Jamaica, Mrs. Inés Fors Fernández.
The diplomat alluded in her presentation to the conquests obtained by the Cuban women after the triumph of the Revolution in 1959. After specifying that Cuba was the first country to sign the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and the second to ratify it, the Ambassador said that at present Cuban women represent 53.22% of the seats in the National Assembly of the People’s Power; 48.4% of the members of the Council of State; 60.5% of higher education graduates; 81.9% of teachers and scientists; 67.2% of technicians and professionals; 49% of the workforce in the civil State sector and 48.6% of leaders nationwide.
The activity was also attended by Dr. Angela Brown-Burke, member of the Jamaican Parliament, who praised the positive relations between Cuba and Jamaica and the contribution of the largest island in the Antilles to the health and education sectors in Jamaica.
