Jamaica highlights medical scholarships program of the Government of Cuba

KINGSTON, JAMAICA, 5 June, 2018.-   In an emotional ceremony held at the Embassy of Cuba in this capital, seven scholarships to study Medical Sciences specialties in Cuba were granted to Jamaican young students.

The ceremony was presided over by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, Ambassador Marcia Gilbert-Roberts, and the Cuban Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández. Likewise, the even was attended by Ambassador-designate of Jamaica to Cuba, Kathryn Phipps, senior officials from the ministries of Health, Finance and the Public Service, and Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, members of the Solidarity Movement, Cuban residents in Jamaica, the media and officials at the Cuban Embassy in Kingston.

During her remarks, the Cuban Ambassador explained to the awardees that they will have the opportunity to study at the Latin American School of Medical Sciences, a project that funded by the Historic Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, that has graduated more than 28 500 doctors from 103 countries. 

"You will have the opportunity to share the values of the Cuban health system, including the solidarity and equity", the diplomat stated.

Likewise, the Permanent Secretary acknowledged the excellence of the Cuban health system that's placed among the best in the world and praised the compromise of Cuba to help strengthen the regional development in the health care area. Gilbert-Roberts also thanked for the large presence of Cuban medical collaborators who are distributed all over the Jamaican geography. 

"On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, allow me to express the sincere gratitude to the people and Government of Cuba for their vital contribution to the health care sector in Jamaica", the senior official referred. 

A special moment during the ceremony was the presence of Jamaican doctors who graduated in Cuba that conveyed their experiences and urged the awardees to seize this unique opportunity. 

In the name of the awardees, student Rakish Suragh complimented Cuba for its solidarity and collaboration and ratified the collective compromise to graduate and come back to Jamaica to serve whenever they are most needed.
