Kingston, Jamaica, 6 August 2020. The Head of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica, H.E Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández, was received yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica by Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Marcia Gilbert -Roberts.
During the meeting, which took place in a cordial and friendly atmosphere, the officials reviewed the main issues on the bilateral agenda and acknowledged the positive state of relations between the two nations.
The Permanent Secretary of Jamaica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade thanked the support of Cuban health professionals to her country’s fight against Covid-19 and ratified Jamaica's position in favour of the principles of sovereign equality of States and the peoples’ right to self-determination set forth in the UN Charter; and against the adoption of sanctions or other unilateral measures that hamper the normal development of relations between governments and peoples.
In turn, the Cuban diplomat thanked Jamaica for its traditional support for the struggle of the Cuban people against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US government and explained to her Jamaican colleague that, taking into account the forecasts of a Covid-19 rebound this fall in the US, it has been decided to postpone the presentation of the draft resolution on the blockade from its traditional date - between late October and early November - to May 2021, during the resumed session of the same 75th session of the UNGA, when it is hoped that the epidemiological situation in New York City ―where the organization is headquartered― will have improved.
Finally, Ambassador Fors took advantage of the happy coincidence of being on the eve of celebrations for the 58th Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence to congratulate her colleague on that event.
