Kingston, Jamaica, 2 May 2021. Jamaica’s parliamentarians, trade union leaders, and leaders of political bodies and organizations in solidarity with Cuba, made their presence felt at the International Online Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba "United We Shall Overcome", held on April 30 and May 1.
In her comments about the sessions -live streamed via Facebook and translated into English- the member of Parliament for the People’s National Party of Jamaica (PNP), Angela Brown Burke, said: “The blockade is a criminal act against the Cuban people. Cuba is not alone. Here we are from all over the world. Fraternal greetings from Jamaica. We shall overcome!". Her husband and also a prominent member of the PNP, Paul Burke, added: “It’s a cruel, wicked and criminal blockade. Our solidarity with the Cuban People.”
For his part, Keith Comrie, General Secretary of the Union of Schools and Agricultural Workers (USAAW), and a member of the leadership of the National Trade Union Council and the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association, pointed out: “We demand that the blockade against Cuba be removed. We wish to express our solidarity with the government and people of Cuba. We also offer our condolences to the families of our comrades who had passed away. Long live the revolutionary Cuba! long live the workers of Cuba! Long live the CTC and the Communist Party of Cuba!”
Likewise, Alexander Scott, Secretary of Communication of Jamaica’s Left Alliance for National Democracy and Socialism, expressed: “Greetings from Jamaica and LANDS. We here are in full support of Cuba and its revolution. Cuba has and continues to show that another way is possible and it remains an inspiration across the world. Solidarity with the Cuban people and the Cuban Revolution, and solidarity with all workers of the world on this May Day. Solidarity with all Cuban medical staff showing what socialism in action looks like. Long live Socialism and long live the Revolution.”
The International Online Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba "United We Shall Overcome" was organized by the Workers‘ Central Union of Cuba (CTC, Spanish acronym) and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP, Spanish acronym), and gathered trade union leaders and organizations in solidarity with Cuba from all continents.
