José Martí Technical High School celebrates the 172nd anniversary of the birth of the Apostle.

Spanish Town, 28 January 2025. The ‘José Martí’ Technical High School was the venue for one of the activities on the occasion of the 172nd anniversary of the birth of our National Hero. The event was attended by the Ambassador of Cuba Fermín Quiñones Sánchez; representatives of the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MOEHYI); Cuban residents linked to the education sector; members of the Club Martiano of the St. Aloysius Primary School and a representation of the state mission.

Students from the centre recited the poem ‘I grow a white rose’, demonstrating the skills acquired in the Spanish language. Ramonia Smith Hamilton, Head of the Spanish Language Department at MOEHYI interacted with the students on the values behind the letters that compose ‘José’. For her part, Martha Corbeth, Cuban resident, invited those present to continue deepening their knowledge of Marti's legacy.

In his remarks, the Cuban Ambassador highlighted the impact of Marti's ideology in the educational policy deployed by the Revolution and in the solidarity and humanist vocation of the collaborators who work in Jamaica, while emphasizing that the cruel blockade of the United States government against the people will not limit our spirit of solidarity and commitment to the nations of the Caribbean. The diplomat called on the ‘new pines’ to make use of Martias teachings to be good men and women who contribute to the future of their homeland.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the visitors paid tribute to José Martí in front of the bust that honours his memory and planted a posture as a symbol of the ties of brotherhood between the two nations.
