Lao and Cuban Foreign Ministries Strengthen Cooperation

Vientiane, July 25, 2025 – The Second Political Consultation Meeting between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba was held in Vientiane, co-chaired by Mr. Maythong Thammavongsa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, and Mr. Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, who led the delegation on a working visit to Laos.

At the meeting, Mr. Thammavongsa offered a warm welcome and expressed his high appreciation for this significant visit, which contributes to the continued consolidation and expansion of friendly relations between the Parties, governments, and peoples of Laos and Cuba. Mr. Peñalver Portal also expressed his satisfaction and gratitude for this welcome.

Both sides highly valued this political consultation meeting, considered a milestone for continuing to strengthen and develop the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between Laos and Cuba. They also highlighted its role in fostering mutual understanding, exchanging information and views, jointly assessing past bilateral cooperation to draw lessons, discussing strategies, and defining future directions for collaboration between the two countries in general, and specifically, further strengthening it between their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

The sides reiterated the importance of the historical cooperative relations between the two countries, based on mutual understanding and assistance between the two Parties, governments, and Lao-Cuban peoples. This cooperation has been gradually promoted and developed, reflected in the frequent exchanges of high-level delegations and ongoing cooperation in sectors such as the economy, public health, education and sports, agriculture, culture and society, and others.

In addition, they agreed to continue reviewing and promoting the implementation of the senior leaders' agreements and previously signed documents, as well as to intensify cooperation in existing areas and sectors, exploring new fields of interest and common benefit. Both sides pledged to continue working to boost trade and investment between the two countries, especially in sectors of mutual potential, and to support each other in regional and international forums. The Cuban counterpart  thanks the Lao support to the Cuban resolution on blockade.

The parties also exchanged brief information on the domestic situation and shared opinions on regional and international issues of common interest.

In conclusion, both sides expressed mutual gratitude to their respective parties and governments for the valuable support and assistance provided over the years, reiterating their determination to continue expanding traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between parties, governments, and people-to-people, aiming to further strengthen and solidify them.
