Laos calls for NAM solidarity, multilateralism.

Embassy of Cuba January 2024 Laos has called on member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to engage in negotiations to resolve complex problems and challenges and create a world of peace and prosperity.

Mr Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune leads the Lao delegation attending the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The call was made by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune when he led the Lao delegation attending the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement on January 19-20 in Kampala, Uganda.

The summit took the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence” and was chaired by His Excellency Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda and President of the NAM for the period 2024-2027.

The summit brought together leaders and representatives of the 104 NAM member and observer countries, as well as international and UN organisations, to reaffirm the principles and goals of the Movement, which was established in 1961 to promote the interests and solidarity of developing countries.

In his speech at the summit, Mr Phoxay expressed his deep concern over the situation in Palestine, and called for an immediate and lasting humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

“Laos is deeply concerned over the ongoing deteriorating security situation and humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” he said.

“We join the international community in the urgent call for an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian ceasefire in order for all essential assistance to swiftly and safely reach all civilians in Gaza,” he added.

He also shared his strong concern over the growing resort to unilateralism and unilaterally imposed measures that undermine the UN Charter and international law.

In addition, Mr Phoxay called for an immediate lifting of the economic embargo on Cuba, saying that sanctions harm innocent people and create more division among countries.

He further stressed the need to promote, reform and strengthen multilateralism and the multilateral decision-making process through the United Nations, with the aim of creating a just and equitable world order and global democratic governance.

At the regional level, he sought the support of NAM members for Asean efforts to promote peace, security, stability and sustainable development in Southeast Asia, based on the principles of Asean unity and centrality as well as the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Mr Phoxay reaffirmed Laos’ commitment to upholding the principles and objectives of the Non-Aligned Movement, fostering unity and resilience in addressing current and emerging challenges.

Laos firmly believes that through collective political will and action, and dialogue and cooperation among all countries, the Movement can tackle the complex issues and challenges of our time and build a more peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world for all.
