Baku, April 5, 20018.Today, the representation of Latin America and the Caribbean called for cooperation, unity and solidarity within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Speaking on behalf of that region at the 18th Ministerial Conference of that group, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister, Abelardo Moreno, stated that trust among nations and respect for sovereignty and independence are the essential pillars of those actions to guarantee international peace and security.
He also reaffirmed the importance of territorial integrity and the non-use or threat of the use of force in the work of the Movement.
Likewise, he urged respect for self-determination of peoples, while rejecting intervention in internal affairs.
Moreno, who heads the Cuban delegation to this meeting, recalled that in Latin America and the Caribbean, these principles were understood and reflected in the Proclamation of that region as a zone of peace, a commitment signed in Havana in January 2014, during the CELAC Summit.
After expressing his gratitude to the Azerbaijan people and government for welcoming the delegates to this meeting in Baku, the diplomat assessed the current international situation as complex, entailing new dangers and threats directly affecting the global stability and the preservation of peace, he said.
In this regard, he recalled the validity of the founding principles of NAM, those of Bandung (1955) and Belgrade (1961), which he considered should be not only preserved but also developed.
In the opening session of the 18th Ministerial Conference of NAM, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, denounced unilateral coercive measures and interventionist and violent plans supported by the United States, that threaten stability and democracy in his country.
In this regard, he called for the solidarity of NAM with the South American country and the Bolivarian Revolution, which Washington erroneously considers a huge threat to its national security.
Attendees at the opening ceremony of the 18th Conference were greeted by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, who announced some details of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of NAM in 2019, when the Caucasian nation will assume the pro tempore presidency of the Third World Forum until 2022.
