Latin America Day is celebrated at the Greek Chancellery

Athens, July 7. The “Day of Latin America and the Caribbean” was celebrated for the first time in Greece, which was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece, with the participation of the Group of Ambassadors of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) accredited to the Hellenic government based in Athens, which are: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The objective of the event has been to highlight and further strengthen Greece's ties with Latin America and the Caribbean. The Director of the Americas (A7) of the Greek Foreign Ministry Nafsika Vraila welcomed and introduced the panel. This was followed by a video message from the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who pointed out, among other aspects, common values, the interest of the Greek government in a rapprochement between Greece and Latin America, that Greece wants investments from Latin America, and that after the pandemic he would take a trip to the region. Then, on behalf of the Foreign Ministry, Vice Minister Kostas Fragogiannis spoke, highlighting the importance of Latin America Day for the first time in Greece, the common values of various kinds, the similarity in obtaining independence in the same period 200 years ago, the importance of developing cooperation at the political and multilateral levels, human rights, culture, sports, academic ties, tourism, etc. Develop mechanisms for inter-foreign ministry consultations with more Latin American countries. Improve economic relations in sectors such as tourism, renewable energy, digital economy, among other aspects. He also referred to the importance of the Greek diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean and vice versa, as bridges between the two. The moderator of the panel, journalist Pavlos Tsimas, gave the floor to the different speakers. First it was the dean of GRULAC Daniel Hernández Joseph, ambassador of Mexico (complete speech is attached); Iasonnas Pipines, adviser to the Prime Minister on Latin America; Konstantinos Antonopoulos, president of the Greece Latin America Business Council and Dimitris Drosos, director of the Department of Hispanic Language and Literature at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. Among those present at the event were Foreign Ministry officials, such as Secretary General Themistoklis Demiris, officials from the Latin American and Caribbean Embassies, and other guests.
