Last March 10, the Latin American Ambassadors in Athens had a meeting with the Director of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) Dr. Manolis Plionis , at the visitors centre in Pentelli , where is located the Newall telescope and its Dome. The Observatory has 3 research centres that are: Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Aplications and Remote Sensing; Institute of Environmental Research and Sustainable Development and the Institute of Geodynamics. Senior representatives of each institute explained to the presents the structure and functions of their institutions , that not only are dedicated to scientific research but also to education and service to the community. It was an excellent meeting that let to strengthen links among latinamerican representatives and greek scientist in order to study te possibilities of cooperation in those areas among our countries.
The Ambassadors could also see the Newall telescope , that was the largest telescope of the world between 1869 and 1873, and, which is a donation to Greece from Cambridge University in UK. It was located in its current place in Pentelli in 1959.
