To the Danish Members of the European Parliament
We have noted that the agenda of the next meeting of the European Parliament contains the item “Declaration of the VPC / HR - Human Rights and the Political Situation in Cuba” - Tuesday, June 8.
It is reported that this is an initiative of members of the European Parliament who want to question the existing agreements between the EU and Cuba when there is a constructive dialogue underway.
The Dano-Cuban Association has appealed from its general meeting, held on Saturday, June 5, to all Danish deputies in the European Parliament, to reject this initiative and safeguard the current agreement.
No country in the world is perfect, but there is absolutely no evidence to make a special criticism of Cuba. On the contrary, we believe that in the current circumstances, amid the worsening of economic conditions due to the extreme hostility of the United States, the country should be respected, in addition, for the efforts in defense of fundamental human rights, especially in the health field, both inside and outside of Cuba.
The EU must maintain a constructive position and reject the US policy towards Cuba, based on the blockade and its continuous attempts to promote political destabilization, promoting a regime change, when coercive measures applied constitute the fundamental cause that prevents the economic development of the nation.
Therefore, the General Assembly of the Dano-Cuban Association urgently requests all Danish members of the European Parliament to condemn the US blockade. It is urgently necessary when the UN General Assembly, on June 23, debates and votes the Cuban resolution on “the need to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockade of the United States".
We attach for information Cuba's report to the UN on the consequences of the blockade for the period from March 2019 to April 2020. This shows that the blockade costs Cuban society at least 96 million Danish crowns per day. It is this atrocity that should be criticized by all those who want to defend the principles of the United Nations Charter on the right to self-determination of nations, and want to defend democracy and human rights, including the right of Cubans to not be economically strangled by the policy of the blockade.
Sincerely
Sven-Erik Simonsen
President
