To: Hon. Mr. H.M. Vijitha Herath, M.P.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism
Democratic People's Republic of Sri Lanka.
Dear Hon. Minister,
Subject: Appeal for Support in Ending the Economic Embargo against Cuba
For over sixty years, Cuba has been affected by the embargo imposed by the United States of America. This measure has inflicted severe and widespread adverse effects on the development of Cuba and the well-being of its people.
This comprehensive blockade represents a profound violation of human rights. It has crippled Cuba's economic capacity and isolated the island from global financial institutions, severely restricting its access to international support and credit. Critical sectors including food security,
agriculture, healthcare, technological development, energy, and access to essential goods have been drastically hindered.
There is ample evidence for the world to see that Cuba and its people are suffering under this blockade. The potential of an entire generation is being stifled, as young Cubans are denied the opportunities to fulfil their true potential.
This year, on 28th and 29th October, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will once again consider and vote on the draft resolution titled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba." We note that last year, 187 United Nations Member States voted in favor of this resolution, marking an overwhelming majority. It must also be noted that Sri Lanka has been a long term supporter of this resolution.
Thank you.
As the Sri Lanka - Cuba Parliamentary Friendship Association, we respectfully request your good self to convey Sri Lanka's support for this resolution at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.
Sincerely,
Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage,M.P.
