Jamaica, 19 May 2026. Across Jamaica, seventy-one schools held lessons to commemorate the 131st anniversary of the fall in battle of our National Hero, José Martí.
The initiative, organised by members of the Educational Brigade, enabled pupils to learn about the life and work of the most universally recognised Cuban, highlighting his political work and his literary works dedicated to children and young people. Through simple verses, the students also demonstrated the Spanish language skills they had acquired.
The lessons served as a platform to highlight the enduring relevance of Martí’s ideology in the revolutionary work of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, as part of the activities to mark the centenary of his birth.
At the event held at Duhaney Park Primary School, the Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica, Tania López Larroque, presented the school’s management with a photograph of the Apostle taken during his first trip to Jamaica in 1892.
