Organized by the Attica Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), a large demonstration of solidarity with the Cuban people and their Revolution took place. The event, which drew a massive crowd, notably including workers and young people waving red and Cuban flags and chanting energetic slogans of solidarity, was held in the Town Hall Square of Perisiteri, the most populous municipality in the Greek capital.
A powerful and firm message of solidarity was reaffirmed by the hundreds of attendees and in the speech given by the Secretary General of the KKE Central Committee, Comrade Dimitris Koutsoumbas: “Cuba is not alone; hands off Cuba!” was the unanimous demand of the participants. “Today we are here,” the party leader asserted, “to honor the memory and contribution of one of the great communist revolutionaries of the 20th century, Commander Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution and the Communist Party of Cuba, whose centenary we commemorate this year.”
“The KKE,” the speaker continued, “honors Fidel’s memory and historical contribution to the cause of social liberation for the peoples of Latin America, to internationalist solidarity with peoples in struggle, to his contribution to the effort to build a new society, and above all, to the Cuban Revolution. The first socialist revolution in the Americas, it was one of the most significant world historical events of the 20th century.”
Once again, attendees demanded an immediate end to the criminal blockade that the United States government has maintained against the Cuban people for over 60 years, a blockade that has been cruelly intensified with the implementation of an energy embargo designed to inflict the greatest possible harm on the population and create a humanitarian crisis with unpredictable consequences. This blockade is causing terrible damage to the heroic Cuban people, with the aim of inducing them to surrender. Another demand from those present was that Cuba be removed from the despicable list of supposed state sponsors of terrorism and that it be allowed to live and work in peace.
At the meeting, the despicable arrest warrant issued by the United States against the historic leader of the Revolution, General Raúl Castro Ruz, for the manipulation of events that occurred 30 years ago, was also condemned once again.
Cuban Ambassador Aramís Fuente Hernández also delivered a speech at the event. The event concluded with a grand musical program featuring revolutionary songs and works by prominent creators and artists who have accompanied the struggles of the workers and the people.
