Athens, 24 November. An Act of tribute was held to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, on the third anniversary of his departure, organized by Cuba's friend Velisarios Kossivakis, with the contribution of his Cuban resident wife Leticia Suarez, and the Embassy of Cuba in Greece, at the Cinema Theater “Studio” from the company New Star Art Cinema.
The Cuban ambassador to the Greek country Zelmys María Dominguez Cortina, the professor of modern history at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Thessaloniki Giorgos Margaritis, presented by Velisairos Kossivakis, took the floor at the event. In addition, the documentary "The Merit is to Be Alive" by Oto Miguel and Guzmán Guerrero was screened, and excerpts from historical speeches by Fidel Castro.
The ambassador commented that Fidel was a follower of the ideas of Cuba's national hero José Martí, "He did not look at which side is best lived, but which side is duty on," consecrated his life to duty to the people of Cuba, and led the revolution that triumphed in January 1959. Moreover, that Fidel was a champion of the struggles for social justice, inspiring Cubans and all those peoples of the world who fight for their dignity, freedom and national sovereignty. He repeatedly stated that the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba "is the fundamental obstacle to the country's economic development." In this regard, she added that the Cuban people have continued to be an example of struggle and resistance against imperialism.
He concluded: "On this third anniversary of his departure, his thinking is still in effect. His words resonate strongly in this troubled world today. Fidel, continue to ride with us everywhere, in everyday actions, in every work, in every achievement of the revolution, in every child who smiles, in every Cuban internationalist doctor who saves a life, in every friend of Cuba who remembers him as you here today”.
For his part, Professor Margaritis referred extensively to the conditions prevailing in Cuba before and after the revolution, as well as to the current development in Latin American countries, stressing that "the more peoples resist, the more they choose way of struggle, the more we will bow to the legacy he left with his word and his work, which we will multiply with respect to the legacy that Fidel left with his speech and his work”.
The event was held by more than 700 people, including the counselor of the Cuban embassy José Oriol Marrero Martínez; the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Dimitris Koutsoumpas; Giorgios Marinus, member of the KKE political bureau in charge of international relations and militants of that party; parliamentarians members of the friendship group with Cuba in parliament such as Giorgios Katrougkalos, former chancellor of the Syriza party and other members of that party; members of various Greek political parties and forces; leaders and members of various solidarity associations such as the Hellenic Cuba Association of Friendship, the Jose Martí Cultural Association, and others; as well as friends of Cuba from different spheres of Greek society, including a young Ethiopian who currently resides in Greece and was graduated in veterinary medicine in Cuba.
Several generations of people joined in this important event, highlighting the presence of many young militants of the Communist Youth of Greece, and of other youth forces of solidarity with Cuba of Greece and a representation of the youth of the party AKEL from Cyprus.
It is considered the largest event held in a theater in solidarity with Cuba in 2019, which became a tribute to the historical leader of the Cuban revolution a great condemnation of the unjust trade and financial economic blockade of the United States against Cuba and a sample of solidarity of the Greek people with the resistance of the Cuban people.
Solidarity associations and Diethnes Vima (International Forum) editorial had tables with books on Fidel, Che, History will absolve me, and other topics about Cuba that they sold to the audience.
The event also had extensive media coverage, before, during and after it on national TV, radio, internet, print and digital media. A press interview was conducted before the event began with KKE Secretary General Dimitris Koutsoumpas, the Cuban Ambassador and Professor Margaritis. Articles on Fidel Castro were also published in the KKE newspaper and other alternative print and digital media.
The friendship of the Greek and Cuban peoples and the admiration for the figure of the Commander-in-Chief and the Cuban Revolution in Greece were demonstrated once again.
