Port Louis, August 17, 2023. The Special Envoy of Cuba, Mrs. Yoisy Ford García, paid a courtesy visit to the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr. Alan Ganoo, at the Ministry headquarters.
The Cuban diplomat delivered an invitation from the President of Cuba, Mr. Miguel Díaz-Canel, addressed to the Mauritian Prime Minister, H. E. Mr. Pravind Kumar JUGNAUTH, to attend the G77+China Summit on the topic "Current development challenges: role of science, technology and innovation" that would be held on September 15 and 16, 2023, in Havana, Cuba.
During the meeting, opportunities were also discussed to strengthen bilateral relations between Mauritius and Cuba in areas of mutual interest, including tourism, trade, investments, the medical and pharmaceutical sector, technical and vocational training, arts, culture, sports, youth affairs, health and community development.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed the wish that Mauritius seek technical assistance from Cuba in the context of the creation of the International Slavery Museum in Mauritius.
Mauritius and Cuba work together in international forums, including the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) for coordinated solutions to global challenges from South-South perspectives and that respond to the special concerns of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked Cuba for supporting the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly on the Chagos Archipelago, which is an integral part of the territory of Mauritius, to complete the decolonization process of Mauritius and allow it to effectively exercise its sovereignty over the archipelago.
The Special Envoy, for her part, expressed her gratitude to Mauritius for consistently voting in favor of the UN and African Union resolutions calling for the immediate lifting of the US trade embargo against Cuba.
Minister Ganoo for his part praised Cuba's leadership role in the South-South Dialogue.
