Accra, May 1, 2024. - The Black Star Square in the Ghanaian capital hosted an international workers' day parade in the presence of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Also in attendance were the country's Vice President and the Secretary General of the Ghana Trade Union Congress, Dr. Yaw Baah.
In his remarks at the event, the President extended special greetings to the Cuban Ambassador and reiterated Ghana's firm opposition to the illegal US blockade against Cuba and their decision to continue to support the island until it is lifted
Secretary General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah expressed: “In the last eight years or so we have established a very strong bond with the working people of Cuba. Every year, a number of trade unionists from Ghana join our brothers and sisters in Cuba to celebrate May Day. This year alone 40 delegates from Ghana are in Cuba. This is important because we want to demonstrate to our Cuban sisters and brothers that we share their pain and suffering resulting from the unnecessary and unjustified blockade which was imposed on Cuba by the United States over 60 years ago”.
He continued his remarks by adding: “We use this opportunity to call on President Joe Biden to end this blockade. We urge the Government of Ghana to use whatever influence it has to get the African Union to impress upon President Joe Biden of the United States of America to end the blockade because innocent Cubans are suffering. We also call on the United Nations to use whatever means available to stop the senseless war in Gaza”.
The 40 members referred to by Dr. Yaw Baah delivered more than 200kg of medicines donated by the Svani Group on 26 April this year, thus helping the people of Cuba and demonstrating their commitment towards the island. Medicines that they took to Cuba, giving up part of their luggage.
In the framework of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations, the ties that unite them both remain unbreakable. The visions of the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz and Kwame Nkrumah are validated by the new generations.
