Media Statement from Democratic Left Front political party condemning the US Embargo against Cuba

US Embargo Against Cuba is Not to Support Reform or Dialogue
We are the Democratic Left Front political party in Sri Lanka. We condemn the continuous US embargo policy against Cuba. The recent escalation of restrictive measures by the United States government toward Cuba is deeply concerning and deserves firm opposition. The June 30 2025 memorandum issued by the U.S. administration, which not only re-imposes a full ban on U.S. citizen travel to Cuba but also strengthens the economic embargo and renews the listing of Cuban state-entities and military-controlled firms subject to sanctions, represents a backward step for the Cuban people, for regional stability, and for the cause of international cooperation.
Rather than offering a pathway toward engagement, dialogue and mutual progress, these measures threaten to isolate Cuba further, exacerbate humanitarian pressure and restrict the ability of the Cuban economy to protect its citizens. They appear calculated not to support reform or dialogue, but to punish an entire nation. Curbing remittances, limiting U.S. travel and targeting civilian commercial relationships undermines the social and economic well-being of ordinary Cubans while not doing little to promote genuine democratic participation.
Furthermore, the punitive approach undermines multilateral principles. The policy explicitly opposes efforts at the United Nations or other international forums to lift the embargo, thereby disregarding decades of global consensus that long-standing unilateral economic warfare is inconsistent with modern norms of international law and human rights.
The Democratic Left Front expresses its unequivocal solidarity with the Cuban people and calls on the U.S. government to halt its sweeping new restrictions. We urge a shift away from maximum-pressure tactics toward a policy anchored in dialogue, economic inclusion, human rights, and mutual respect. The challenge before us is to build international frameworks that uplift working people and the masses, safeguard civil liberties, and support sustainable development in Cuba, not one of coercion that delays progress and deepens hardship. It is not a Humanity or a Justice.
