Kandy, April 5, 2025. The Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Andrés Marcelo González Garrido, was received by Professor Sarath Abeykoon, Governor of the Central Province of Sri Lanka, at the Central Provincial Council, located in the city of Kandy.
During the meeting, they discussed possible areas of cooperation between Cuba and the Central Province of Sri Lanka, as well as the historic relations of friendship and solidarity that endure between the two countries. He updated him on the bilateral relationship.
The ambassador updated the governor on the tasks the country is undertaking to move forward and achieve its economic development, despite the ongoing intensification of the United States economic blockade, as well as the new measures that have been applied to the island.
The governor recognized the courage of the people and Cuba's development in the field of public health and expressed his admiration for the historic leaders of the revolution.
The Cuban diplomat gave the governor as gift a silkscreen print by Cuban painter Elio Fidel Villate Lam, and the governor presented him with a replica of an elephant, a symbol of Sri Lanka's culture, history, and nature.
The Central Provincial Council Authority Area comprises three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale, and Nuwaraeliya. The Central Provincial Council is composed of 58 elected members representing the main Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities living in Central Province, which has a population of 2,811,000.
