Meeting with the President of the Commission for the Nigerian Diaspora

Abuja, November 18, 2024.- The Ambassador of Cuba in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, held a meeting this afternoon with the Chairman of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

One of the main topics discussed was the invitation to participate in the International Conference Cuba 2024, Decade for People of African Descent: Equality-Equity-Social Justice, which will be held in the provinces of Havana and Matanzas during December 9 and 13, with spaces for analysis, reflection and debate through panels and special presentations; visits to cultural and educational institutions and communities, as well as artistic performances.

This conference is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the National Program against Racism and Discrimination of the Republic of Cuba “Color Cubano”, in addition to having the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF).  Its objectives are:

1. To raise awareness of the commitment and work done by Cuba in the fight against Racism and Discrimination based on skin color and ethnic origin, both nationally or territorially, since January 1st, 1959, emphasizing on its role during the International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024.

2. To exchange experiences between different countries on facing and preventing racism and discrimination based on skin color and ethnic, national or territorial origin, in all its forms.

3. To discuss about issues of inclusion, integration, equality, equity and respect to identities.

During the meeting, Ambassador Morales highlighted the strong ties between both peoples since the period of colonization and the slave trade, as a large number of them arrived in Cuba, mainly from Nigeria. She thanked the warm welcome and conveyed the importance of continuing to strengthen ties between the countries.

For her part, the President of the Commission, Abike Dabiri, welcomed the invitation with great satisfaction, saying that it would be an excellent time for contact and exchange, not only with Cuba, but also with other participating countries in which there is also a presence of the Nigerian diaspora.

The President of the Commission, also called the "Lady of the Diaspora" for her pioneering efforts to put diaspora issues in the foreground, is a figure with a high degree of national recognition for her work focused on improving the lifestyle and care of women and children, throughout her career and for her more than 15 years in the world of television in Nigeria.

The Third Secretary, Ana Flavia Gómez Pavot, was also present on the Cuban side.
