October 24, 2024.- The Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, held a meeting with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, at the headquarters of the subregional organization.
The objective of the meeting was to address pending bilateral issues between Cuba and ECOWAS, in terms of medical, educational, agricultural and biotechnology cooperation. The moment was also propitious to update on the situation in Cuba as a result of the energy crisis that began last Friday and the consequences of Hurricane Oscar passing through the eastern provinces of the country.
The Cuban Ambassador thanked the reception offered, while conveying the damage and precariousness to which the blockade of the United States of America has been subjecting the island for more than 60 years. She said that the inclusion of Cuba in the unilateral and spurious list of countries that supposedly sponsor terrorism has seriously worsened the situation in the country, resulting in the current inhuman circumstances in which Cubans are trying to develop.
For his part, Dr. Touray recognized the historic and constant support to Cuba from African countries, especially from the members of ECOWAS with whom there are excellent relations. He commented on having touched closely the work that Cuban doctors do in the different communities of many African countries, since his father was treated by members of the medical brigade based in his native country Gambia. He mentioned how over time a very common practice among African representatives at the United Nations has been to place the subject of Cuba as one of the main lines of messages in their speeches, since he himself adopted it as a practice while he held the position of foreign minister in his country. Once again, he thanked Cuba for the affection and brotherhood with which it has always viewed Africa and the unbreakable bond that will continue to unite both.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission was accompanied by his Director of Cabinet, Mr. Abdou Kolley, while the Third Secretary, Ana Flavia Gómez Pavot, was present on the Cuban side.
